Peterborough United moved into second place in League Two after a fine 2-0 win at Wrexham thanks to a brace of free-kicks from Jamie Day at a blustery Racecourse Ground.
Posh made one change to the line-up from Saturday's 3-0 victory at Macclesfield Town with Jamie Day replacing Daniel Blanchett. It only took four minutes for centre back Steve Evans to have a Posh player on the floor, but Craig Mackail-Smith shrugged off the knock to rejoin the action.
Goalkeeper Joe Lewis made a fine save to deny Drewe Broughton on five minutes after the striker intercepted a Carl Tremarco effort and fired goal-wards. Lewis then denied Stuart Nicholson as the hosts made a bright start to proceedings at a cold Racecourse Ground.
Dean Keates was booked for a foul on 18 minutes as Wrexham continued to look lively, pinning Posh back with long balls up-field to Broughton. Aaron Mclean saw two shots blocked after good work in the air from Chris Whelpdale at the back post following a deep George Boyd centre as Posh responded.
Boyd fired over from 25-yards moments later as Darren Ferguson's men found some joy down the right hand side. A bizarre miss-judgement from Ward who completely missed the ball from a Day delivery nearly led to the breakthrough, but Evans was on hand to hack the ball clear from under his own crossbar as Mackail-Smith closed in.
Frenchman Claude Gnakpa saw a 20-yard shot find the side-netting after two poorly taken corners from Keates were cleared. Mclean scuffed an effort straight at Ward on 36 minutes and moments later Bolland had to be at his best to divert a Mclean cross wide of Mackail-Smith who looked as if he was going to slot the ball home.
Day then whistled a shot wide of the post as Posh began to get on top as the first half entered the final five minutes. A goal-less score-line at half-time and both sides will be fairly content with neither side creating a clear-cut opportunity.
Tremarco wasted the first opportunity of the second half as he blazed well wide following a half cleared corner from Mclean. Lewis denied Evans' downward header from a Spann corner kick on the hour mark and set pieces looked the most likely route how the hosts would score.
Evans sent an acrobatic volley wide of the upright as the home faithful began to get behind their side, particularly with the news that Mansfield had taken the lead against Bury at Field Mill.
The deadlock was broken on 66 minutes and it was a wickedly taken free-kick by the returning DAY who curled the ball around the wall and into the back of the net past the despairing dive of Ward.
Spender fired over three minutes later from long-range as the home side tried to get back into the fixture. Wrexham made a double change with Rob Duffy and Michael Procter introduced while Posh brought on Liam Hatch for the hard-working Mackail-Smith.
Substitute Hatch made an immediate impact but it was not the right sort of challenge to be making as he appeared to lead with his arm in a challenge with Ward - the referee producing a yellow card.
On 80 minutes, Posh doubled their lead and it was DAY again, this was an even better free-kick as he flighted the set-piece over the wall and into the roof of the net to the delight of his team-mates.
Bolland found the side-netting with a weak effort on 86 minutes and it was getting into the last few minutes as Posh tried to hang on. Three minutes of added time was indicated by the fourth official and Fergie's men were comfortably in control, in fact the hosts had never really looked like breaking through the excellent Posh rearguard marshalled by Chris Westwood.
Final Score: Wrexham AFC 0-2 Peterborough United
Referee: Mr M Thorpe (Suffolk)
Attendance: 4,103 (179 Posh fans)
